Who was the Green Man?

The Green Man is the object of much mystery and conjecture. Many believe that the Green Man is the origin of tales about Robin Hood.

However, his origins can be traced much further back than that. In Egypt he may have been Osiris who was frequently shown wearing green while in Greek mythology the Green Man was probably Dionysus who was often depicted as a figure who had branches coming from his head.

In Nordic legend he's been associated with Thor, the protector of both Gods and men. Then there's the Norse tale of Mimir a god of nature who was kept alive on herbs and spring water.

Other myths which have been associated with the Green Man include the tale of Herne the Hunter who was the mysterious watcher of the forest and, less convincingly, he's been associated with the legend of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus/Father Christmas).

The Green Man's face has also been depicted in numerous ways. Most often staring out of his mantle of green (as shown above). Alternatively, he's been shown frowning and grimacing as well as in a more jovial state where his enigmatic face is smiling.

Although almost certainly of Pagan origin, the Green Man has been incorporated into Christianity so his face is often seen staring out from religious buildings such as cathedrals and chapels.

Whoever he really was, the Green Man has always been surrounded by an air of mystery.
